Leaves From the Green Bank Journal

Introduction

Here are pages from what has come to be A Green Bank Journal. Originally written as a series of letters to a close friend, they soon became an account of recollections and discoveries stirred and encountered in my latter days by the serene and wooded places whose beauty had been shared by my wife and me, and where, now, only one of that pair lives to record his lonesome impressions and reflections of the seemingly ever-more-rapid passage of the seasons.

I dedicate these pages to Jean, my wife, whose love of these woods and the river that flows through them was deep and abiding.

My life shall never be the same without her.

        La vie est vaine;
        un peu d'amour,
        un peu de haine,
        et puis "bonjour."

        La vie est bréve;
        un peu d'espoir,
        un peu de rêve,
        et puis "bonsoir."
