Nicolas Poussin raised a cosmic question in the above painting. Although there have been many interpretations of Et in Arcadia Ego, the one that has been held by most is that it means death is with us always, even in Arcadia, an ancient pastoral world where shepherds tended their flocks and all was peaceful and harmonious. The painter uses a group of such shepherds who seem to be mystified by the inscription. Perhaps some think that it may be a reminder that death is a part of life and remains always a mystery in nature as well as in man. |
